Crock Pot Ham and Bean Soup
I really love making homemade soups in my crock pot. Most of the time when I’m using it to make soups I’m making a homemade broth first. Today I used a ham bone with meat attached to it left over from a Thanksgiving dinner that I had in the freezer to make Crock Pot Ham and Bean Soup. On other occasions I’ve used ham hocks from my favorite local butcher. When I can take the leftovers from a previous meal and make it brand new,I feel like I just got a freebie.
It’s so important to make the most rich and flavorful broth you can when making soup, it’s one of the reasons we love it so much. That is definitely attainable using my crock pot! I love throwing everything into it and letting it cook for hours. The best part is that I don’t have to watch it, I don’t have to be afraid it’ll boil over or the broth will evaporate too fast. It just does it’s thing while I do mine. We’re going to make this delicious crock pot soup together so let’s gather the ingredients.
Crock Pot Ham and Bean Soup Ingredients:
- One ham bone with meat attached or a ham hock
- 2 stalks celery with greens attached, chopped
- 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped
- 1 large onion, diced
- Four 15 ounce cans Great Northern Beans, drained
- 2 Bay Leaves
- Pepper to taste
- Enough water to cover the ham bone or ham hock
Place the ham bone with meat attached or ham hock into a 4-6 quart crock pot. Put enough water into the crock pot to cover the ham bone or ham hock. Add the celery, carrots, onion, pepper and bays leaves to the slow cooker. Put the lid on the crock pot and set turn the setting to high setting. Cook the ingredients on high for at least 7 hours. The longer you cook the ingredients the richer the broth will be.
After seven hours remove the ham bone or ham hock from the slow cooker. Remove the meat from the bone and add it to the crock pot and throw the bone away. Add four cans of drained Northern Beans to the crock pot and place the lid back on. Cook long enough for the beans to heat through. After the soup is finished cooking you can mash some of the beans with a potato masher if you like to make the broth a little richer. Remove the bay leave before ladling the soup into bowls.
Whenever my 82 year old mom makes Ham and Bean soup she takes a potato masher and mashes some of the beans up after the soup has cooked to make the broth a little richer. The rest of the beans are left “just so” in the soup to make it hearty.
